Is a German Shepherd too much responsibility for a young owner?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello, I want to get a new dog (had dog around 6 years ago), it's german shepherd. My mom thinks it's too big and that I wouldn't take it outside for a walk everyday (because I didn't do it with the old one, but I was really young), but I think I can do it. My routine isn't very active, except the sport. So I thought it could help me go outside more. We'd keep him inside when we're at the home and outside when we're not. I'm soon to be 15 btw. Any advice?

Hello there! It's great that you are reaching out for advice and help. Your mother may be right that a German Shepherd may be too much for you to take on at your age. They are highly active dogs that need at least 30-45 minutes of strenuous exercise twice a day as well as mental stimulation and lots of behavioral training. It is a lot of responsibility and a big time commitment. Maybe if you made out a schedule showing your mother when you will walk, play with, and train your dog, then she will allow you to get on. I hope this helps :-)
