My dog had cancer surgery. Does his good behavior mean it hasn't spread?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | 12 years old

My dog got a mass/tumor removed from his ear (he got his whole ear flap cut off) and they tested it and it came back as cancer. They have to test a lymph node I think it's called in a couple days but he has no symptoms for cancer in a dog he's gained weight has no loss of appetite he's playful and ever since it was removed he's been acting like a puppy. Is this a positive sign it has not spread? The little guy acts like he's on top of the earth lol.

Yes, you are correct that it is called a lymph node and it is typically tested to see if cancer has spread. I wish I could tell you that these symptoms mean for sure the cancer hasn't spread. Dogs can be very stoic about illness, and oftentimes they don't show any sign of illness unit they are quite sick. I would wait for the results of the lymph node biopsy, and if that comes back clear, then I would celebrate. I certainly hope it comes back clean for Joey :-)
