My bulldog needs anxiety meds, but vet won't continue her Xanax.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 45 lbs

My bulldog is very sensitive to medication and the vet has finally found a medication to help her anxiety, however she went on maternity leave, and the vet there wants to put her on Prozac but she has gotten sick off Zoloft. I also explained I am going in for surgery I can't afford for her to get sick just bc you don't want to file papers to continue her xanax. What should I do? I can't drive bc low blood count, but my dog needs her medication?

If Xanax was an effective medication for Ali's anxiety, I would definitely say that you should stick with regimen. If the current veterinarian is not willing to provide you with a prescription for this, I would find another vet who appreciates the situation a little bit better. In terms of Prozac vs Zoloft, Prozac has much fewer side effects in dogs than Zoloft, so sickness with one does not necessarily translate to sickness with another. Behavior issues including anxiety are often very difficult to resolve so if at all possible, find a way to keep Ali on the medication she currently is have success with.
