The best things that you can do include cleaning the wound with an antiseptic soap (such as chlorhexidine or betadine) and keeping an e-collar (cone) on your cat to prevent any skin damage from scratching. If you do not have an e-collar at home, this link provides some tips to make one at home: http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html. Your vet will be able to evaluate the extent of the wound and start antibiotics. I hope that all goes well!

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics or antifungal meds are absolutely needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can be possibly started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths, but a check up is necessary. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.
