Why is my pug losing weight and has an arched back but seems fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 15 lbs

My pug is about 7 years old and he looks like he is losing weight and his back seems a little arched to me as well. Do you have any idea what could cause these symptoms? He is eating well and acting fine otherwise.

An arched back in an otherwise normal acting dog is likely due to spondylosis (bridging of the spine with arthritis bony fragments). Weight loss can be due to numerous things including intestinal parasites, malabsorption, certain diseases and lymphoma (common). I would recommend baseline bloodwork to rule in/out a lot of these disorders and also just to have an overall view of Huck's health status. Radiographs of his spine can detect if he has any spondylosis as well.
