How to stop my dog from sniffing and getting distracted on walks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 3 year old dog starts out walking okay but she gets distracted by other people and pets on our walk and she's obsessed with sniffing everything, and she'll slow down towards the middle of our walk. How do I break this behavior

This sounds like very normal dog behavior. If you really must change it then you can do a quick, gentle but firm correction on her leash and use a consistent term such as "this way" or "leave it". It is also important to give her a time in which this free behavior is okay. You can unleash her and say "go play" for example.
