My kitten has weak back legs and drags himself. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 7 days old

My kitten Volkan which i found 8 weeks ago has weekness in his back legs When he walks or runs the give way on him They will fall to the side and then he uses his front legs to still keep going and then he corrects himself. Tho he will drag himself around a little bit. If he jumps off something he mainly lands on his front feet. He is gradually getting stronger in his back legs tho ie he is teaching himself to jump etc and i uses my hand a resistance to make him use his muscles. He is happy

If Volkan is having issues with use of his hind end, the likely cause of this is either of musculoskeletal or neurologic origin. Usually when there is a musculoskeletal component, there will be some sort of painful element to the problem. If the problem is neurologic, typically there will diminished to absent pain response in the affected areas. There also some infectious and immune mediated diseases that can cause problems with the use of certain parts of the body. My recommendation would be to have Volkan looked at by a veterinarian to further investigate the issue. On the other hand, if he seems to be improving steadily without treatment, you can also take a wait and see approach. Best of luck to you and Volkan!
