These are 3 different blood tests commonly performed to assess overall health. The CBC (complete blood count) assesses the red & white blood cells and platelets. A chemistry 24 evaluates overall organ function, measuring values of liver and kidney enzymes, blood glucose, electrolytes and blood proteins. There are several different thyroid tests, which measure different thyroid hormones. Always remember that any test results are interpreted in light of clinical exam findings and any clinical signs that Hobbs may be displaying at home.

    A CBC is called a complete blood count and evaluates white cells and red cells in the body. A chem 12 includes blood levels of albumin, blood urea nitrogen, calcium, carbon dioxide, chloride, creatinine, glucose, potassium, sodium, total bilirubin and protein, and liver enzymes (alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and aspartate aminotransferase). A chem 6 includes Carbon Dioxide), Chloride, Creatinine, Potassium, Sodium, and Urea Nitrogen.

What is all checked on a full blood test with UA & T4? Like which organs or bodily functions? Precious had hers done & everything was good but I’m curious as to what all was exactly tested.
That will depend on the lab offering the test. T4 checks thyroid function, Urinalysis (UA) checks for blood, white blood cells, specific gravity, bilirubin, glucose, protein, ketones, and urobilinogen, the results of all of these can tell whether kidneys, and liver are working properly and whether there may be a problem with your dog's metabolism. If I wanted to get his liver and kidneys checked do I have to do an entire blood panel?
Liver and kidney values (ALT, Alk Phos, GGT, BUN, Creatinine) are on Chemistry panels which can be ordered separately from Complete Blood Counts that measure neutrophil counts (elevated with infection), hematocrit (a measure of hydration status), platelet levels (an indicator of clotting function). I recommend asking your vet for pricing for just the Chem panel vs pricing for a CBC/Chem panel if desired. Good luck!

Hello my 10 year old cat went to vet for her 6 mth Checkup and her doctor did labwork but not a full senior panel.. just a post methimazole panel which I believe she said shows thyroid and kidney values. Is this correct and does this lesser blood pan
Hello! Thank you for your question. Whether or not the lab results included more values depends on what exact laboratory test was ordered. There are a variety of tests out there and they all vary in what values they test for. Some only test for a small handful of values, others are more extensive. I would call your veterinarian and request a copy of Trixie's blood work and also talk to the vet about the blood work that was run. That way you may better understand what was included and if additional testing is needed or desired for Trixie.

What test for enzymes are combined to determine liver function or warning of liver disease?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! The liver function tests commonly available in a routine chemistry panel are glucose, albumin, cholesterol and BUN. A more specific, though separate test of liver function is bile acids which is the gold standard as far as liver function goes. Good luck!

Hi, I believe my cat has Hyperthyroidism and wanted to know how much it usually cost to have the test run?
The cost depends on your area and if your vet wants to run a full panel to check all the chemistries and organ functions or if they want to just check the thyroid levels. Call you vet and ask what the cost would be. If it is the first time, the vet will probably want a complete panel and these generally run $100-150. These are helpful because it gives a good baseline to compare future blood results against and can give indications of early kidney or liver disease, diabetes, and is a good indicator of overall health.

Our vet does a pre-anesthesia bloodwork in the office right before the procedure that day... what things would they be checking for that would give them a response that quickly? Is that common?
Hi. I would ask Bella's vet what tests they specifically run but many veterinary clinics have inhouse blood machines that can check a complete blood count (white cell counts, red cell counts, hematocrit) and chemistry values to can help assess liver and kidney function, as well as blood glucose, etc. in some cases urinalysis may also be run. With the in house machines results are typically available in under an hour. There are a variety of tests and panels that may be used as general health screening and/or preanesthetic screening. Please talk with Bella's vet about any concerns you may have. I'm sure they want you to be comfortable about any procedures being performed.

May I know your view on the report attached
It's difficult to interpret lab work without some information on what symptoms the pet is having, why the test was run, etc. Without more information, all I can really say is that this CBC shows an elevated red blood cell count, which may indicate that the pet is dehydrated or can be a variation of normal in some pets. The white blood cell counts are mildly decreased, which can indicate some type of infection or, again, may not have any particular clinical significance. Feel free to post again with more information about what your pet is doing that concerns you, if you wish.

Each test has different purposes. The chemistry is an overview of the liver enzymes and elevation of specific enzymes has the potential to be caused by different mechanisms or diseases. The bile acids is likely the function test which should that the liver still is functioning appropriately. The 2nd chemistry is likely to compare to the first to make sure the elevations are not rising. Without actually seeing the tests, I cannot interpret them for you.

Increased thirst and urination can be commom symptoms of many disease processes and you are right that the first things we check for are metabolic (kidney disease, diabetes, etc.). The answer to your question is both. A urinalysis should always be performed as part of a blood panel, otherwise you are missing crucial information. Your vet will likely order a senior kitty wellness panel from an outside lab which will include cbc, chemistry panel, thyroid testing, and urinalysis.
