Is a strong heartbeat normal for a small dog while sleeping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 13 days old | 6 lbs

My Pomeraninan's heart is beating too hard (while asleep) that I mistook it for his breathing. I could see his side constantly moving up and down due to his heartbeat. I checked his heart rate several of time and its in the normal range. Is it normal for small dog to have strong heartbeat? Should I be worried?

It's good that Teddy's heart rate is normal, and yes small dogs can have a strong heartbeat. I would be concerned if his heart rate wasn't in the normal range, and it may be easier to see his heart rate simply because he was lying on his side. As long as he is behaving normally, is active, isn't showing any sings of exercise intolerance, or isn't having breathing difficulties, then I would not worry :-)
