My dog's ear has hard gray buildup. How do I safely remove it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 18 lbs

My dachshund's ears have hard to remove gray-ish dirt on the ear flap. It can't be removed using the cleaning solution or damp washcloth or oil. What can I use to remove the dirt? Thank you!

I would only recommend placing dog formulated ear cleaner in Chuckie's ears to remove this debris. If it doesn't come off right away but doesn't seem to be bothering him, then I wouldn't worry to much about it. Just soak it in the solution once a day until it softens enough to be removed succesfully. Also keep in mind that most debris should remove relatively easily with gentle manipulation, so if it is hardened it may not be debris after all. I would suspect that it may be a lesion or mass on the ear and would recommend having your vet take a look at it to investigate it a little further. I hope this helps!
