My dog has blood in her urine and pees often. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Female | spayed | 6 years and 7 months old | 16 lbs

My 5 year old havanese has had 2 previous UTIs. Scheduled re-check at 3 months after ending antibiotics was done 4 days ago. Vet called yesterday said culture showed low levels of non-resistant e-coli. Her plan was to continue d-Mannose twice a day and re-check in 2 months. Today she has blood tinged urine and increased frequency. She is acting fine otherwise. What I would like to know is if I need to consider this urgent or is it ok to wait for her get tomorrow? Thank you!

I'm sorry Pebbles has been having such problems with UTIs! This is a great question. This depends. If she appears otherwise healthy and happy, eats and drinks plenty, you can wait until Monday morning. If she appears lethargic, ill or distressed, or if the urine appears very bloody, then she should be seen by a vet ASAP. Feed her wet/canned food, add water to it, and make sure she drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder.

Hi there. Hematuria could be caused by a number of different things, including a UTI, bladder stones, or a bladder tumor. She does need to see a vet, but if she's acting normal, I wouldn't consider this to be an emergency - so you could opt to wait and take her to your regular vet's office tomorrow, if you want to. Your veterinarian can do a urinalysis, and may recommend x-rays or ultrasound of her bladder if needed to help diagnose the problem.
