Can I give my dog extra prednisone for comfort before euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 13 years and 10 months old | 60 lbs

My 14 year old is dying of lung cancer. She has been on prednisone for three days to try and give her some relief but it only gives her temporary minor relief.. I have a euthanasia scheduled for Monday but my question is can I give her an extra dose of prednisone today and her final dose tomorrow morning in effort to try and give her as much relief as possible.

I'm so sorry! It will not hurt to give her more pred but this is likely not going to make her feel any better. She really needs pain medication. If your vet gave you an opiate pain medication like tramadol, this is appropriate to give up to three times daily. More pred is likely going to make her pant more and could potentially make her feel nauseous--it is a steroid and not specifically pain medication.
