My neutered male cats fought after hearing cat noises. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I have two male cats, both neutered, Normally they get along fine with the occasional play fighting which usually ends in them grooming each other. Jusr recently I was on the internet a stopped on a site with cat noises and played them. These cats tore into each other and are now hissing like crazy. What should I do, separate them for tonight or just let them work it out?

It does sound like cat nosies set them off with each other! I would separate them for tonight if they are hissing like crazy, and see how they are in the morning. Let them sniff each other and if there is no aggression, then they can be left together. Should they still be grumpy with each other, I will give you a method for slowing introducing them to each other slowly. Method for reintroducing them: I would separate the cats, and slowly reintroduce them to each other. Take Jass, and put him in his own room with his own food, water, and litter box. Keep the door closed, and for a few days, feed them both treats on other side of door so they associate each other's smell with a good experience. Then let Malachi in the Jazz's room while Jazz is in a cat carrier. They can smell each other, but not be in contact. If either becomes upset or show signs of aggression, remove Malachi from the room, and try again later. Praise them when they interact appropriately. When they are interacting well with each other through the carrier, you can let Jazz out of his room, and see how he interacts with Malachi. Praise them when they interact appropriately, and separate them with any sign of aggression or upset. I would get a cat tree with lots of shelves to give the cats vertical space to get away from each other. I would keep Jazz in his room when you go out until they are comfortable with each other.
