My lovebird has feather loss and scratches. Is it molting or mites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My peach-faced lovebird has a tiny patch of feather loss. You can't really see it unless he turns his head. I believed he was molting but, now I'm not sure. His weight is fine he's eating and drinking well. He is growing more flight feather quickly. Plucking has crossed my mind but, he never pulls at his feathers. He get plenty of attention and care he's playful personality has not changed. I have seen him scratch more during the day. So I don't know if it is molting or something else.

If your bird is otherwise acting normally and healthy, it is possible it may be a molt, especially if you are seeing feathers coming back in already. Other possible causes to look for are plucking, as you suggested, as well as parasites such as mites/lice. Making sure your bird is in an area that is low stress (aka, he has a chance to relax quietly when he needs to) can help as well as looking for/treating any possible mites. If the bald patch increases, the feathers don't regrow, or you see other issues, then having a vet take a look is best.
