My old cat lost bladder control after being dehydrated. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 16 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

Hello! My 17-year-old indoor cat escaped for the first time on Tuesday evening. We found him this afternoon (2.75 days later), and he was extremely dehydrated. He is doing much better now, 12 hours later, but he appears to have lost all bladder control. I'm planning to take him to the emergency vet in the morning, but I'm worried now and wondering what might be wrong. Thank you for your input!

Renal failure could be the cause of excessive urination, on top of that urinary infection could resemble incontinence. I would consider the check up and urine analysis essential to start investigating the underlying cause. Antibiotics may be needed.
