How to feed two dogs when one is dominant and hogs all the food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have just moved in with my boyfriend. he has two dogs, a husky(female) and a medium mix breed(male). prior to me moving in the family just filled 2 bowls with food and 2 bowls with water and just left it for the dogs to eat whenever and as much as they want. I am very concerned with this as the female is very dominant and consumes all of the food and water, only allowing the male to eat when she doesn't want anymore. is this okay? if not please advise on other options

If both dogs are in good body condition and not over- or underweight this may be fine. If not I would definitely recommend measuring food and feeding twice daily for a specified period of time. Food gets taken up if it isn't finished in about 15-30 minutes. If the female still tries to eat the male's food they may need to be separated for meals.
