My diabetic dog is having seizures again. Could it be his blood sugar?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male

My dog is on medicine to prevent his seizures and it has been working until now. He has had around 3 seizures in past month. He also was diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago.

I would recommend seeing your veterinarian right away. Even though Otis has a history of seizures, seizures could also be a sign of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and his insulin dose may need to be adjusted. If he has another seizure you should rub some Karo syrup on his gums and see a veterinarian immediately so his blood sugar can be checked.

It could be Mali has insulinoma. An insulinoma is a tumor of the pancreas that affects the regulation of your dog's sugar levels, causing hypoglycemia, also referred to as low blood sugar. I would take her back into the vet first thing in the morning.
