My dog is losing hair, has dry crusty skin & black spots. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi my fog is losing almost all of his hair on his back, legs and tail. He developed small dry patches (sores) on his back. Crusty dry skin. Also developed a big sore on his tummy which got better with bactroban. Now there is small black dots in this area. What can it be? What can we use to stop it?

It's possible your pet is experiencing symptoms of a bacterial infection due to mange mite infestation. You'll want to be sure to visit your local Veterinarian as soon as possible and request a skin scraping examination. This will allow your doctor to identify the underlying cause of your pets discomfort. You're doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to help stop the infection and mite/mange treatment if needed.
