Dachshund with Cushing's: Why is her tail losing hair and itching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 13 years and 10 months old | 12.5 lbs

My 13 year dachshund has been diagnosed with Cushings.. Hair loss on tail is getting bad - how will this hair loss affect her? I have been using Genta Spray to help with itching but don't know what else to do. Thank you.

Hi there and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach about Karly. There can be many reasons for the hair loss on her tail and itching. Hair loss on the tail is very common in Dachsunds as they get older and is breed-related. However, for this reason alone, it does not cause itching and irritation. Hair loss can be related to her Cushing's disease. This type of hair loss also does not cause itching and irritation, however secondary infections of the skin and elsewhere are common in dogs with Cushings disease. This may be one of the possibilities for the itching and irritation. Flea bites can cause fur loss, itching, and irritation on the tail and tail base area. If the genta spray has not been working and it continues to bother her, I would recommend to schedule an appointment with Carly's veterinarian to determine if she needs additional medications to ease her discomfort.
