Does my elderly indoor cat in Georgia still need heartworm meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 16 years and 9 months old | 10.5 lbs

I have a nearly 17 year old indoor cat who lives in Georgia. We have given her preventative heart worm meds since she was a kitten but we are wondering if they really continue to be necessary given her age. What's your opinion?

Yes, I would continue to give Chloe the heartworm medication. There are lots of mosquitoes in Georgia, and since mosquitoes can easily enter the home and cause her infection, it's best to continue this prevention. You can't tell if a specific mosquito is infected or not, and at her age a heartworm infection would be very tough on her physically. For her health, my opinion is to continue the preventative :-)
