Why is my puppy peeing so much after mushroom treatment and IV fluids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 2 months and 17 days old

My puppy seems to have eaten a toxic mushroom that gave him bad diarrhea and a big bout of vomiting. Our vet gave him activated charcoal and an IV and sub-q fluids, as well as soft diet Royal Canin food. He's doing better tonight overall but constantly has to pee and is hardly able to control his bladder to make it outside - he's usually very good. Is this normal due to the fluid treatment or flushing out the mushroom toxins? Should I be worried?

I'm sorry Fiddle ate a toxic mushroom, but good on you for taking him into the vet right away! Given that he had both an IV and sub-q fluids, it could be these fluids are what is causing him to have to urinate so much. I would keep an eye on him for now, and if he continues to have problems with this excessive urination in the morning, I would give the vet a call to see if they want you to bring him in.

Yes, steroids and iv fluids can both cause increased urination and the signs generally do resolve over 10-14days. If signs are not reducing over this time, blood tests to rule out kidney damage would be recommended
