My dog's anus is swollen after neutering. Should I go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 5 lbs

Hello, I'm very worried for my dog and don't know if I should take him to the vet. His butt hole is swollen and his scab came off from his recent neutering. Any recommendations or is this normal?

Oh no, poor Firulais! It isn't normal for a dog's anus to be swollen, and it could be caused by intestinal worms or impacted anal sacs. You will see the scabs coming off from his incision, and as long as the incision isn't red, swollen, warm to the touch, or has pus then that it normal. I would have Firulais seen by a vet in the morning to diagnose what is causing his anus to be swollen so he can be treated. If his anal sacs are impacted, the vet can express them for him.
