My dog has open sores and thick skin. How can I help him now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 16 lbs

Our daschund has a thickening of the skin on his one hind leg and bites it a lot and right now there are open sores. He also has a leathery patch on his chest with an open sore right under his armpit. Our vet can not see him for a week. Suggestions?

Poor guy. I would recommend keeping these areas clean with a Betadine rinse diluted 50:50 with warm water for the first day or two, then doing copious sterile saline (from local pharmacy) flushes. You may also want to place an e-collar (cone) on Wein so that he can't get to the area and lick it, which will only cause further irritation and infection. This will help keep infection at bay until he can be seen by your vet. I hope Wein's skin problems resolve soon!
