Dog sick after grooming: coughing, vomiting, hiding. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 16 lbs

On Friday I took my dog to get groomed he was fine but on Saturday he woke up with what I thought was reverse sneezing, this lasted the whole day. Sunday he started throwing up so I took him to the vet they prescribed him doxycycline Monday he continued to throw up. Today he sounds like he's choking or coughing. He doesn't want anybody near him he hides under the bed.

Oh my. Poor Buddy! This seems a bit extreme even for a Kennel cough, which is what your vet is treating him for with the Doxycycline. It can take about 48-72 hrs of medication before you see improvement; however, if he is getting worse and seems to be in respiratory distress and difficulty breathing, then he needs to go back to the vet for another look. He may need some diagnostics ran (radiographs of his chest) and/or stronger antibiotics to help him recover faster. I do hope your fur baby feels better soon!
