My cat ate chicken skin and fat. What should I do if she gets sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

When I wasn't looking, my cat (8-12 years old) ate at least a cup of chicken skin and fat. She's happily been smugly purring away for 2 hours now, no change in behavior or activity though she seems to be drinking more water. She's healthy and a good weight. Eek!?

That was naughty of Vurtue to eat that cup of chicken skin and fat! The good news is that in cats eating a lot of fat doesn't cause pancreatitis, but you could see some GI upset from eating all that food. If you do see any GI upset in the form of vomiting or diarrhea, I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Silly girl, hope she's ok!
