Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

Should I take my dog to the emergency vet? He has vomiting, diarrhea, loss appetite, weak, and is slobbering a bit. Thank you for your help.

Oh no, poor Ghost! When a dog has a myriad of symptoms such as the ones you describe him having, seeing a vet as soon as possible would be best. I would recommend having him seen by an emergency vet now. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Leyla! If Leyla is weak then she should be seen today at an Emergency hospital. At only 3 lbs dehydration and low blood sugar is a real concern. Causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: intestinal parasites (bring stool sample), viral or bacterial infections especially parvo, toxin ingestion, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross outside), new food/treat/human food, food allergy. You can try removing all water for 4-6 hours and food for 12 hours. If there is no vomiting in 4-6 hours offer only small sips of water. If that goes well then start feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice at the 12 hour mark. If she continues to vomit during the fast or will not eat then she needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Leyla the very best!
