What is this sticky bald spot on my dog's rear after a hike?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 55 lbs

So I went on a hike this weekend with my dog and she was very exhausted for a day and a half afterwards. She is now eating and drinking and peppy again. But today I got home and noticed a sort of sticky spot in her hair on her rear. When I started to pick the sticky stuff out her hair came out leaving a thumb sized bald spot. It is slightly sensitive when I touch it and she flinches but doesn't whine. It is slightly pink but not really red. She cant reach to scratch it.

The scab could be from a wound she got during the hike, or from something unrelated. If it doesn't seem itchy or painful, and the hair grows back over time, it is nothing to worry about. Velvet sounds like she was pretty worn out from the hiking adventure, but if she is completely recovered now, then great. If she is an older girl, you may need to have pain medication on hand for future adventures. Consider a vet visit for an examination and ask your vet if having an anti inflammatory medication like Rimadyl on hand at home for soreness after big hikes is a good idea for Velvet in the future.
