My dog's nipples are dark and saggy after heat. Is it false pregnancy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 50 lbs

My female pitboxer just went out of heat like a month and half ago and I believe she is going through false pregnancy. Ive noticed that her nipples got really dark, crusty, and saggy. My question is what could be wrong with her? They are definitely an eye sore but she doesnt seem to be in any pain. Do you have any recommendations on what I should do for her?

The timing and symptoms could point to a false pregnancy. Have a examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. Treatment is typically not required in mild cases. Symptoms should abate within 2-3 weeks. If they don't or her behavior worsens, your vet can dispense medications to decrease milk production and possibly tranquilizers/sedatives for anxiety. Severe cases can be treated with hormone replacement therapy. To prevent future episodes, having her spayed would be the recommended course of action.

Hi there. When your dog has experienced heat cycles, their bodies will react differently from dog to dog. Much like puberty in humans, with the beginnings of such hormonal fluxes, breast enlargement as well as vulvar are common and may be permanent. Certain types of infections, called pyometras, are also a possibility-if your pup is lethargic, not eating or drinking, or has purulent discharge she should see a vet immediately.
