Why is my cat acting aggressive and stressed since we got a new cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 14 lbs

I've had Slade since Dec 2015, he was always the sweetest cat, but ever since Princess came into the picture, a year ago, he's a completely different cat, he lashes out at her, he growls at everyone, and doesn't sleep in our bed anymore; he used to sleep in our bed every night.

He may be experiencing some stress and anxiety from having another cat in the house. You could try Feliway Spray or a diffuser and see if that helps. You could also try Solliquin and see if that helps. If he is still having issues than your vet could prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac. http://www.feliway.com/us/#redirected http://www.solliquin.com/

You could try some Feliway spray or diffuser and see if that helps. Otherwise, an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac or Trazodone, may help. Talk to his vet about prescribing some medications to help relieve his stress. http://www.feliway.com/us/#redirected

When your cat is stressed, removal of the cause of stress is the cure. However sometimes it is hard to find the cause. This could even be something he sees outside through the window, such as the neighbour's cat teasing him. I suggest you get some Feliway dispensers for your house. Feliway is a feline "happy" pheromone which can relieve stress. You will need to do this for a few months. Take away everything inedible that he may ingest. Instead of expecting him to play with himself, take out time everyday for about 30 minutes and actively play with him by throwing paper balls, or pulling a string so he can run after it, or let him chase a laser point. If none of this works (incl. the Feliway), discuss this with your veterinarian. Bandit may then need some medication to reduce stress.
