My dog ate a stone. Does no gas mean less risk of full blockage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | neutered | 8 years and 9 months old | 79 lbs

My dog has swallowed a stone which is sitting in the middle of his intestines. Currently in emergency vets at astronomical cost. No build up of gas in intestine so far and will be re scanned throughout the night. Looking to wait to have him operated on tomorrow at his usual vets to reduce the cost. If there is no gas build up does that mean that there is no full blockage which reduces the likelihood of further complications ?

It is a good sign that there isn't gas building up behind the stone, which may indicate some gas is still able to pass through, however it is best that your vet continues to monitor as this may change as the stone moves through the intestines, or if it becomes lodged in a section of intestine. As for complications, it really depends on if the stone moves or if anything changes overnight. Your vet monitoring Clyde can best keep you updated on what is going on.
