My male cat is more affectionate with my partner. Do male cats prefer male owners?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

We found a six month old stray in the street and took him in. He is one now and I noticed he is very affectionate with my partner but not me so much. Whenever my partner comes near or sits close by lio will jumps up, give 10 head bumps in a row and flip up side down. And he won't do that with me I even try to put him on my lap but he would just leave and go to my partners lap not sure why that is. I tried feeding him treats on my lap but he just eats and leaves. Do male cats prefer male owners?

There is no known correlation between an owner's sex and there ability to bond with their pet of the same sex. Lio may have just bonded more closely with your partner than you for reasons we may never fully understand. If you want to forge a closer relationship with Lio, my main suggestion would be to try and emulate your partner the best you can, as this seems to be the key to Lio's heart.
