Why is my dog scratching his face? Are his thick, red whiskers normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 20.08 lbs

Keeps scratching his snout, Paws at it. Rubs it on the floor more that normal. His whiskers feel weird. Some feel thicker than other and the hurt when they poke my skin. Is that normal for his whiskers to be that thick? Never felt them that thick before. What should I do? The "thick whiskers" look reddish at the skin.

Hello. Whiskers are thick, this is normal. Itching face and redness isn't normal. Itching face could be due to ear infection or mites, allergies, or if very sudden could be a bug bite or bee sting. Watch for facial swelling or hives and if present have him to a vet right away. If the itching persists then have his skin checked by a vet. Good luck!
