My senior Shih Tzu's legs give out. Is it bronchitis or heart issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 26 lbs

I have a 12 yo male shih tzu with hx of chronic bronchitis, on Flovent. Yesterday, he had two episodes of back legs giving out when we got excited. Can dogs vasovagol like humans? Ca. Chronic bronchitis lead to heart issues for dogs?

Hello. I am sorry that Orso isn't feeling well. Dogs can get a vaso-vagal response however what you are describing is more concerning for heart disease vs. vaso-vagal. Usually we see the vaso-vagal response with vomiting in dogs, not general excitement. Chronic bronchitis is usually independent to heart disease however the heart and lungs are intertwined so you often see overlapping disease and the two diseases do effect one another. I would recommend having Orso into your vet for a check up for the heart (physical exam as well as x-rays and possible echocardiogram), and also to assess circulation and ability to breath at this point as well. Good luck with Orso.
