My dog was bred, has appetite, but no weight gain. Is she pregnant with few pups?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 30 lbs

It was her second week into heat. So she was flagging herself by our male . We worked on a ranch so they were left in a safe backyard to breed. I wrote down a total of 12 ties that I saw. Maybe more when we weren't home. It's been a month since she was bred. She has a bigger appetite, and is starting to let my kitten nurse on her. But she's barely gained weight. Our other female is huge (deffinely prego). Is it possible this female only has 1 or two puppies? She just started to get morningsic

Since it has been at least one month both since the breeding, your veterinarian should be able to confirm pregnancy via bloodwork, palpation or abdominal xrays or ultrasound. It may be a bit early to put a number to the litter yet. You may need to wait another couple weeks before the pups can be clearly discernable on x-ray. Other causes for Lina's lack of weight gain can be diagnosed after an exam. She should be eating a good quality puppy food from now, if she is pregnant, until she weans the litter.
