My dog got hit by a car. Could he have hidden internal injuries?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 30 lbs

My dog got hit by a car today morning. Fortunately, the impact from the side of car and he didn't came under the wheels. He appears to be walking fine, there is limping. His pupils are fine and reacting to light. There was no bleeding from mouth, nose or ears. There is no swelling anywhere in the body. He seems to be fine. Even though it looked that he hit the side of car with his legs, I'm a bit scared of any internal brain injury. an I be sure that there is no serious brain injury.

The only method of ruling out traumatic brain injury with 100% certainty is with advanced imaging modalities like CT and MRI. If your dog is not experiencing any neurologic deficits, is reacting light and is visually sound, and has normal mental acuity, it is unlikely there is any brain damage. Regardless of what you may notice at home, getting struck by a vehicle is definitely something that I would take Otis to the vet to get looked over. Even though you aren't seeing anything obvious, they can make sure there isn't any free fluid in the abdomen or air in the thoracic cavity.
