My dog's on 6 meds for dental issues. Any concerns about interactions?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | neutered | 12 years and 10 months old | 16 lbs

My dog has been prescribed 6 medications to treat a periodontal issue. I'd just like a sanity check to be sure there are no concerning indications. Metacam (14 days), Tramadol (14d), Gabapentin (14d), Clavaseptin (14d), Metronidazole (14d), Cerenia (5d)

Poor K! It sounds like quite a serious periodontal issue - I hope he's feeling better soon :( Generally speaking, all of the medications you have listed are safe to be given together - none of them would be expected to have any harmful interactions. Metacam is an anti-inflammatory medication, tramadol and gabapentin are pain medications that work in different ways and are often used together, Clavaseptin and metronidazole are antibiotics that both cover different types of bacteria, and Cerenia is an anti-nausea medication that also has some anti-inflammatory effects.

There are no known interactions between these drugs. Please contact K's vet if he develops any side effects (primarily vomiting or diarrhea) while taking these medications. I hope that his periodontal issue resolves quickly!
