My 13-year-old Pomeranian has a bleeding, itching lump. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 35 lbs

Hello there, I just noticed this yesterday on my 13 year old Pomeranian. I felt a lump and then looked and this is what I found. Middle is rough and callused looking. Being a nursing student, my thought was lymphoma. Bleeding and itching is occurring as well. I don't think another animal got ahold of him as well. Thanks for your help!

Ouch, looks painful! As there is a hole in the lump that appears ruptured it's possible it may be an abscess that has ruptured, or may be a growth in the process of rapidly changing. Since the wound is so large and actively bleeding it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP to have the site looked at, treated and medications such as antibiotics given to help facilitate healing.

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
