My budgie is mating with young babies. Is this normal? How to prevent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

I saw my budgie couple mating this morning. She already has 6 babies in the nest box. Youngest baby is 5 days old and the oldest one is 14 days days old. Is this normal behaviour? I don't want her to start second clutch as it can stress her. Please help. Thanks.

It is not recommended to breed your budgie too soon after having a clutch because this can deplete her calcium reserves. Separating her from the male would be the best way to prevent further breeding. If she has already mated with the male, adding a calcium supplement to her food or water may help her to restore her calcium levels.
