My dog is rubbing after skunk wash. Is it the peroxide? Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Our dog was skunked earlier this evening - we washed him with the recommended hydrogen peroxide/dish soap/baking soda mixture and then with regular dog shampoo, and he smells fine now. However, we've brought him back inside and now he's rubbing his face and sides of his body on everything he can. Could the hydrogen peroxide have bothered him? Should we take him to the vet tomorrow?

Yes I would take him to your vet as both the skunk's liquid and peroxide can be quite irritant and cause itch. In the meantime wash him with water again and gently rinse/wash his eyes and face as well. Sometimes eye drops are needed to calm down the inflammation. a buster collar would be helpful if the itch persist.
