Why is my dog's face swelling and she's limping after a tick bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 38 lbs

Hi, Kirou has the last two weeks had swollen smaller areas in her snout area and under her eyes. It looks like shes been stung, but it happens morning and night, approx 2 a day. Twice during this period she has suddenly started limping, different joints. I took her to the vet after the first swelling, which covered her entire face, and she got an anti-histamin shot. Afterwards the swellings have appeared freq, but less in size. I found a tick on her days before the swelling first appeared.

I'm sorry to hear that Kirou has not been feeling well. The swelling on her muzzle is certainly quite prominent. Lameness that shifts between different legs and joints is most commonly caused by tick-borne diseases (such as lyme disease), but could also be due to immune-mediated or other infectious diseases. At this point, Kirou should go back to her vet for a recheck and some diagnostic testing. Blood tests are available to determine if tick borne diseases are present. If extra fluid is palpable in any of her joints, the vet may need to draw out a sample for analysis. Biopsies may also be needed of the lesions on her muzzle. Kirou's clinical signs are a bit unusual and will require some testing to get to the bottom of the issue. I hope that she's on the mend soon!
