My dog had giardia, why is her poop still soft and inconsistent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 4 months and 6 days old | 12 lbs

Pepper had giardia (too soon to retest if gone). Stool is sometimes still not as firm as it should be but has improved. Sometimes she will have a normal firm stool that is immediatly followed by a very thin stool. It's not every time. Sometimes when she has a more firm stool (not constipated) she will make a subtle whine once while going. This has only happened twice over a matter of a few weeks. No blood, redness and stool Is normal color. Any idea what this could be?

Based on what you are saying, it sounds like Pepper might benefit from a probiotic in her diet to keep her more "regular". Organisms like Giardia have the ability to complete throw off the microflora of the intestinal tract, so the addition of something to right the situation is often required. There are several over the counter ones available at pet stores, my favorite being fortiflora canine. You just sprinkle it on the food once a day for thirty days. Dogs usually love the taste so it's not problem. It will be nice to know if the Giardia is gone after the retest, but I think the probiotic for now is the best plan of action.
