Can chews replace brushing, and is 40 mins play enough for my GSD?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 81 lbs

Can I replace tooth cleaning with special chewing toys for dental health? Also, I have quite a busy schedule, is it enough to play with my German Shepherd for 40 minutes each day?

Special chewing toys will help, but dogs really do need teeth brushing daily just like humans to keep their teeth in the best possible condition. I do understand having a busy schedule, but 40 minutes a day really isn't enough for a GSD. It would be better if you could set aside 30 minutes twice a day for Rusty to play.
