My 8-year-old Jack Russell had puppies. Is she too old to breed again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 8 years old | 15.5 lbs

My Jack Russell bitch has just turned 8. She had one litter of puppies at 2 ¾ years old. Is she too old to have another litter.

Yes, Lily is too old to have another litter. It's never recommended to breed a dog older than six years of age due to the increased risk of dystocia and the effects it has on the dog. I would not breed her again, and I would recommend spaying her to prevent her from developing a pyometra in the future.
