Why does my dog whine when jumping or standing on his back legs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 75 lbs

I have a 2 yr old red nose pit. He whines when he gets up on the couch or when he stands on his hind legs. Hes an acrobatic dog. But he walks around like nothings wrong. Any suggestions? I patted and squeezed all 4 legs hoping he'd give me a sign...but didnt.

I'm encouraged that Brownie is still very active and is generally unconcerned by his hind leg issues. Possible causes of this hind leg pain include hip dysplasia or other congenital hip issues, a partial ACL tear in the knee, arthritis (unusual at such a young age, but still possible), back pain, etc. Some dogs can be quite stoic when we are trying to locate a source of pain! A vet should examine Brownie to determine if there are any palpable areas of discomfort. X-rays may be needed depending on what is identified on exam.

He may have some hip or lower back pain. Have him examined by your veterinarian. X-rays may be required. Until then, restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Avoid or prevent excessive running, jumping or rough play. Do not allow him to jump onto the couch or use pet steps or a ramp instead.

I’m sorry to hear that Brownie isn’t feeling well. His reluctance to go down the stairs, trembling, stiffness and simply being a Dachshund make me suspicious that he may be experiencing back and/or neck pain. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is one of the more common causes of back pain in dogs, and occurs when the disc material between the vertebrae push down onto the spinal cord. At this point, your best option is to take Brownie to his vet for evaluation. He may need diagnostic testing and pain medication. Until you can take him to the vet, restrict his activity by avoiding any running, jumping or playing, and ideally confining him to a crate or small room. Do not give him any pain medication (including aspirin) at home, as many over the counter medications are toxic to dogs and may interfere with the safer and more effective options that your vet can prescribe. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
