My dog fights nail trims. How to make it easier and less scary?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 20 lbs

My dog hates having his nails clipped. He cries yelps and nips at whoever is doing the clipping even at the groomers and vet. Don't want to muzzle him but it's getting close. Any suggestions to make the experience not so traumatic?

I am unsure why you do not want to muzzle him - this would make the entire procedure safer and more secure for al involved and therefore less stressful for Tebow. Regularly handling his feet and moving his toenails to get him used to the sensation can help but it is not a procedure many dogs enjoy. It may be that he has some stiffness and discomfort also making it more difficult for him to have his legs held up

Poor Tebow! This is a very common problem - many dogs get very stressed and upset about having their nails trimmed, especially if they have ever been "quicked" (had a nail cut too short) in the past. You can teach him to happily allow this procedure by using lots of treats and going slowly, so that he's comfortable the entire time. This is a video by Dr. Sophia Yin demonstrating how to do this with a dog that is aggressive at first for nail trims. I think you'll find it very helpful! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWZUcLfHXLE
