My dog has a heart murmur, meds aren't working. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 10 years and 10 months old | 18 lbs

My dog has a heart murmur. His vet said that involves a leaky valve. 3 weeks ago my dog was placed on a diuretic and 2 other medications to help with his heart function. Today his vet added another diuretic. The vet said he's seen dogs who improved greatly with the previous treatment. My dog didn't improve that much so he added the other diuretic. I'm just wondering if my dog has other options. He's 11 and is still very active. He's a miniature pinscher and he's 18lbs. Thanks for your h

I'm very sorry Brooklyn has a heart murmur! Unfortunately, medication is the only option in animal heath for heart disease. Surgery is not done in dogs with heart problems, and some dogs will respond better to the medical treatment than others. The best thing you can do is give Brooklyn his medications as prescribed and have him seen by a vet right away with any questions or concerns.
