My dog's gas smells like peroxide/ammonia on antibiotics. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 132 lbs

Dog is currently on antibiotics and steroids for a bacterial infection (skin/coat) and allergy to grass. Her flatulence today smells very strongly of peroxide/ammonia. I am concerned. This is day 5 of taking these medications.

The flatulence is gross and scary, but not medically dangerous. The antibiotics may by upsetting Freybug's stomach a bit. Don't stop the antibiotics, since they are important for clearing up her skin. You can give her some probiotics and feed her a bland diet of chicken and rice for a week to help settle her stomach. If she's having diarrhea or vomiting, let your vet know and they may be able to switch her to a different antibiotic. Good luck!
