Can borax ant traps harm cats, even if not directly ingested?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I laid out 3 ant traps that contained 5% borax in each metal container that only had holes small enough in them for ants to crawl in. 12 hours later my cat couldn't walk and the vet said he may of had a seizure and had to put him down. He was 10 years old. I'm wondering if the 2 are connected or just unfortunate timing. There were no punctures in the traps that would indicate that cat ingested any of the ant trap contents. Did the ant traps kill me cat? asked another way, can borax 5% kill?

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your cat! How awful. It's very unlikely that the ant traps would have had anything at all to do this with this - borax is fairly non-toxic, and would require ingestion of a really large amount in order to cause any serious problems. Exposure to traces of it from simply being in the same area as the traps should not cause any issues at all. Again, I'm very sorry for the loss of your kitty.
