Cat spraying after UTI. Could water filtration help prevent it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 5 years and 8 months old | 15 lbs

My female cat is about 6 years old. She's been spayed, and is up to date on all her vaccinations. The only problem is she is constantly urinating on vertical surfaces! I took her to the vet, where they said she had a UTI, they gave her antibiotics which seemed to help for a week, but then she started up again. My question is whether it is possible that the cause of this and the UTI could be the water I am giving her? If so, would a water filtration device help? Thank you

Hi! It is really unlikely that a water filtration system will help, so I wouldn't suggest changing the water. But, if she had a UTI, and the symptoms seemed to respond to the antibiotics, but then she started with her symptoms again, the UTI might not have been fully cleared up. Your vet could potentially do a urine culture (which means sending a urine sample out to a lab, which could test the urine for bacteria). This way your vet would know for sure whether there is an infection, and which antibiotic would be the most helpful. Or, there could be no infection, and Nalah might be urinating on vertical surfaces because she is in the habit of doing so, or because of other behavioral issues. If so, she may need help retraining to the litter box. My advice to you would be to have her rechecked by your vet, to see what might be best. This should be a solvable problem, and I wish you the best of luck with Nalah!
