My pit's allergic snout is chapped and bleeding. Vet or home remedy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 95 lbs

My 3 yr old pit has allergies & normally will turn red in places. Well this time he's become irritated on his snout and has been rubbing it on everything as well as constantly licking it. It's now "chapped" & bleeding. I just need some kind of remedy for him to feel better. Or should I take him into our local vet.

This sounds quite uncomfortable for Blue! Since the lesion on his muzzle is open and bleeding, it sounds as though a trip to his vet is indicated. Some skin lesions can develop secondary infections due to licking or other means of irritation. Blue may need antibiotics, anti-itch medications and antihistamines to help manage this issue. Try to put an e-collar (cone) on Blue until you can take him to the vet to prevent him from rubbing his muzzle and irritating it further. I hope that he's feeling better soon!
